Project Description:
The idea for my project started when someone I know asked me to make a side table for along side her bed. I had some thoughts of one, so off I went to the wood supplier. My original idea was to make the legs free standing then have the drawer supported by just the table top. But as I soon found out, the legs would not of been sturdy enough. I wound up using a couple pieces of Walnut to make a support to hold everything together. I did mortise and tenons on the cross supports and dowel the rest into place.

I like it! I think the drawer of walnut might have looked out of place by itself, with the top and legs both of maple; but the addition of walnut leg stretchers balances that out.

Nice work Nick! Curious why you chose to leave the back off of the drawer casing? The wood is definitely nice and pretty…but what about doing a maple drawer bottom to coincide with the rest of the table? Really enjoyed the chamfers as well on the leg supports. Great job overall!

Very nice, I really like the leg curves and the figure on the drawer front as well the contrasting woods. The drawer pull is perfect to my tastes in color and proportion.

thanks everyone nice to get some outside opinions.im gunna make another for my self.theres two reasons for not putting the back on the drawer.one i ran out of walnut at the time and two i wanted it to be a simple as possible .but a back on it would help support it better mabe.the inside of the drawer is maple too it just darkened up alot more cause i think it was abit darker to begin with .thanks again

Is the top made of two pieces of maple? How wide is that top? The reason I ask is the interesting transition from the curly rift/quarter sawn portion (bottom of the pic) to the non-curly flat sawn portion (top of pic). That appears to be a pretty wide board, but I know silver maples get pretty large so maybe this stock came from a local mill? I’ve never worked with soft maple before–did you notice if it marred easily? Are you concerned with the surface marring with daily wear? If I knew the durability of soft maple a bit more I might suggest coating the top with poly, but maybe it’s still hard enough without that to withstand a lamp and a book.

the top is one piece i was lucky to find it at the wood place i goto.the top is 2 feet wide and about 16 inches wide.the way the curly was it was just like that the way it came.im still new to finishs and wood types i didnt really notice anything unusual about anything .might ask mark about the different types of wood.and personaly i like the oil i think marc may have said before if an oil finish gets damaged its easier to fix or refinish if it get worn.

Some beautifully finished wood but I’m not a fan of the overall design. Partially due to my personal taste of more modern design but I think the drawer looks sort of tacked on. It bothers me that it’s not built into and attached to the legs. Maybe that’s the look you were going for though.
