The Drunken Woodworker’s Shop

This is my basement woodworking shop. I just moved into this house in July so I’m still working on placement and workflow.

The Makita compound miter saw was the first woodworking tool I purchased. The piece that started the whole thing just 1.5 years ago!

The centerpiece of the shop is my Grizzly 1980′s table saw. That thing is a beast but is held together with duct tape. She’s getting replaced in a couple of weeks with a brand new Saw Stop!

That’s quite a collection is just a year and a half of collecting. The Makita miter saw is a great place to start a shop. My first real piece started with a drill press that I found cheap on CL. It’s only gotten more expensive. Good luck with you future tool purchases.

Can’t resist the comment about size mattering. It’s not the size of the shop, it’s what comes out of it. I’m sure you’ll have many years of great production.

I have the same drill press and never noticed any out of square-ness on it. I also have the same planner, and have noticed that I can send through laminated boards of different species as long as I take VERY small passes. I really hate the amount of Snipe from it though!

Nice Shop, although I think I would recommend leaving the drinking till after the cutting! lol

    Wheres the beer fridge at?

  5. Hey Jmossoney, you’re right around the corner from me. You make it into Toledo much?

Joel, I haven’t noticed my drill press table not being square. You could try building a new table for it and adjust that to be square. I’d like to for mine someday for more work surface and a fence for repeatable cuts. I think Steve Ramsey did a nice video podcast on one a few months back.

Dean, No real wood storage as of yet. Pretty much I just buy wood as I need it and make little boxes out of the scrapes.

Sean, I think Matt has always been that way. I’d blame woodworking before I blame the basement. Our basement isn’t creepy at all. We are remodeling the half of the basement that is not shown. Putting in new floors, ceiling and building a couple of walls for our new recording studio. My girlfriend and I are in a band together so we’re doing a lot of acoustical treatment and sound proofing to it. I really love our basement!

Patrick and John, I plan on getting the SawStop Contractor with 36” fence with the add-on cast iron wings. It’s $2000 but the way I see it, it’ll be the last table saw I ever buy (hopefully).

I got the same planer as a craigs list special. It works great except when I send a cutting board through it, just had to order new blades and blade guards because the mahogany and maple wreaked havoc on it. For some reason laminated boards of the same species go through fine, but different species of wood don’t work. Maybe I need a more powerful planer.

Nice set up…. You will love your Sawstop!!! I have the 3hp Industrial

cool shop bro. I don’t know but something about a basement workshop creeps me out. Look at what its done to Matt.

  9. Dean September 27, 2012

I like your shop. It seems like you have all the bases covered equipment wise. Looks like you could make just about anything. Do you have a separate wood storage area, or do you mainly buy wood as needed?

  10. Joel September 27, 2012

I have that same drill press – do you have a problem with the table not being square front to back (the non-adjustable direction)?

  11. Brian September 27, 2012

It seems that you have fallen down the steep slope of tool purchasing. I hope you can take advantage of craigslist to help your wallet out. Good luck!

Great shop for only a year and haft, your heading in the right direction. I live Defiance O

  13. Bob September 27, 2012

Nice looking shop and also very well equipped for only 1.5 year.

  14. I’m not completely sure yet. Right now they’re piled up in one of the corners. I’m currently building a new workbench (nothing fancy. Plans from Woodsmith) and will probably have something on the wall near that. I’ve seen some nice mobile clamp carts that I wouldn’t mind making as well. Time will tell.

  15. John Verreault (aka JohnnyVee) September 27, 2012

Great looking shop! Nice mix of equipment (old and new) and that Saw Stop will fit right in. What are your plans for storing your clamps?

  16. Thanks! I didn’t get the Saw Stop yet. I’m going to the Woodworking in America conference in November and want to see if Saw Stop has any deals going on that weekend.

Doug, as far as access goes, it’s decent. The basement stairs leads right up to the back door. I can get a 4×8 of plywood down there although it’s not fun.

  17. John Fitz September 27, 2012

I like it! I love the older items you have. Congrats on your upcoming SS. Which model did you get? I have a 3HP PCS, and love it.

  18. Doug Hoffer September 27, 2012

Looks good! Do you have decent access to bring material into your shop?
