Last summer I finished up a toybox for my 2 year old son and wanted to build a book shelf to match. The design is by Kara Gebhart from Popular Woodworking magazine. It consists of all mortise and tenon joinery. It was also built from rough cut lumber.

very nice, i like how the top and bottom shelves hold the sides on with wedges, cool design!

Good job, Chris! I’ve always loved the look of cherry, as well as working with it. This piece has a simple, no frills look to it that I really like.
The only thing I’d worry about is that to a 2, 3, or 4 year old boy it may look too much like a ladder, i.e. something to climb on. I think I’d do something to anchor it to the wall just in case. But then, I’m paranoid about things like that

Chris, great bookcase. I really like the attention you paid to detail, especialy the tops of the legs and the fit of the shelves. Your son will store all his treasures on here, and as he matures, this will be his treasure because Dad made it for me

Nice work. I like how the wedges keep it from racking. It took me a while to figure that one out.

Did you use a chisel to cut angled mortices for the wedges?

Great design! My family just moved into a new house in Rochester and i was thinking of building some shelves – i might just have to go down to Pittsford Lumber and get some cherry to build my own copy of YOUR design! :)

Thanks for all the comments. It does break down but it is tough to take apart because one of the sides has to come off before I can take out the middle shelves. The mortises are not angled, they were cut with a mortising machine. I was surprised how sturdy it is.

Chris,that is a great book shelf.I was wondering if you would supply the dimmensions and wood working plans and tools needed that I may build it.I am a JROTC instructor and would like to use your design with permission to use as a portflio holder.
