232 – Clear Vue Mini CV-06 Update

The new ClearVue Mini CV-06 is an improved version of Clear Vue’s cyclone separator. I tested the old unit in my Cyclone Separator Shootout back in 2012 and the unit didn’t do all that well. More dust passed through the system (compared to comparable units) and the bucket collapsed under pressure. I’m happy to report that the new Mini CV-06 does not suffer from any of these issues and now performs at least as well as the best competition on the market, including the winner of the 2012 shootout The Dust Deputy from Oneida.

If you’re in the market for a cyclone separator, the Clear Vue Mini CV-06 is now a strong contender and it’s worth your consideration.

Nice round-up Marc. I bought this style of separator recently, I was amazed at the results. I tested it with MDF dust and a brand new dust bag, not a speck got through (by the naked eye).

Does anyone know if the use of the cone increases suction, or just makes it a more efficient separator?

I think the separator, “technically, will reduce the overall CFM only because it raises the static pressure of the system. I don’t know if it is of any measurable amount of enough to affect the overall performance of the system. I use a cyclone seperator on my shop vac and it works very well. I believe the trade-off is well worth the advantages.

Nice work Marc in updating the previous video. I really enjoy your stuff as it offers an unbiased opinion of what works and what’s out there. . . .

  They aren’t a show sponsor anymore. I believe they still offer a discount to Guild members but not the general public.

  Mine isn’t. They also don’t supply grounding materials. That doesn’t mean it couldn’t benefit from some grounding.

    So Marc, it appears you are running this with your festool CT extractor. I’m guessing you’re aware of all the hoopla on FOG (Festool Owners Group forum) with regards to the Dust Deputy causing circuit boards to fry because they weren’t sufficiently grounded between the tool and the earth ground. Obviously there must have been something to it, Dust Deputy covered the cost of at least one guys circuit board repair and they’ve updated there system and offer an patch to update existing systems. There whole change seems to be based on providing an uninterrupted ground from the tool through the antistatic hose and cyclone to a ground at the extractor itself. Is there any info from ClearVue that they have addressed this problem, or is it perhaps a problem they’ll deal with if they have to?

      I believe his DD was mounted to his CT Vac wasn’t it? With a separate collector not attached to the vac (aside from the AS hose) this becomes not an issue to the best of my knowledge. It is only when attaching a cyclone type system, say to a systainer, which is directly connected to the vac that this becomes a problem.

How easy does the lid come off for bucket removal? My shop vac is on casters and is moved around quite a bit. I’m just wondering how steady is the Mini06 with the cone sticking up like that and a the hose hanging off of it. Is it fragile?

Marc, You didn’t mention the price of the CV-06 in comparison to the other units. I looked it up and it seems the Clear Vue CV-06 costs about half again as much as the Oneida Dust Deputy. The CV-06 also looks significantly taller (tippier?). Since both the Clear Vue and Oneida do a great job, wouldn’t the “shootout” winner come down to things like price and size?

  Price and size are indeed a consideration. This video was intended as an update to the CV-06 performance issues and not an attempt at declaring a new winner.

Hi Mark
I am new to woodworking but completed some great projects…most of which with your help. I will become a guild member at some point to take better advantage, but for the meantime need to get a dust solution. I would never run more than one machine at a time. I have a 3hp Sawstop PCS, and a 13″ planer etc. these are likely the big culprits for dust etc. There is so much (too much) info out there and i honestly don’t know what to buy. The Sawstop has a 4″ port so assume i need something that supports this. I was hoping to get a festool vac but sadly the 4″ won work with that. Any suggestions for a one man shop keeping a reasonable budget unmanned. I know Im not a member and for that reason may not get a response. Whether or not i see something from you I will continue to be a supporter. Thanks for all the video contact, fantastic stuff.

You don’t need to be a Guild ember to get an answer to your questions, especially here on the free site. :) My recommendation is you get your foot in the door with a simple roll-around dust collector.   There are also videos out there showing how you can upgrade this unit without breaking the bank. Sure there are other better dust collectors on the market, but this one seems like a good bang for the buck and will suit your needs. Good luck!

Hi Marc i made my own dust collection with a 40 gallon drum.I bought a cyclone of Amazon and could not wait to try it i was amazed the way it worked so well. Then disaster it sucked the drum in until it was ruined i do not know what has happened have you any idea what is wrong.I am new to woodworking and have watched your shows and am learning all the time. HOPE you can help

  The drum could not handle the vacuum created by your dust collector and collapsed. This is similar to what happened int he original CV-06 model.

  Hi, I also built my own. I am able to get <4 microns WITHOUT ANY FILTERS WHATEVER. EVEN on choke loads.
