From the Back of the Case

If you have ever wanted to take a “hands-on-class” with David Marks, although haven’t been able to, than this DVD is as close to the hands on experience as you can get while viewing this in the comfort of your own home. The viewer will feel as if they are in David’s shop getting personal instruction. Art is in the details as is demonstrated by David’s meticulous craftsmanship.

David Marks has been teaching students how to do double bevel marquetry since the mid 1990′s. This 90 minute DVD is a thorough step by step lesson of this process, including how to create your own designs even if you don’t think of yourself as being artistic.

Demonstrations in this DVD include:
- The design process.
- Demonstration of cutting thick veneer.
- Setting up the scroll saw for perfect cuts.
- Sand shading, gluing , and finishing the surface.
- There is also a chapter on the work of students that have studied with David as well as some work that has inspired David.

Our Thoughts

If you’re familiar with David Marks from his Woodworks days, you might be surprised to see what the “real” David is like. He’s much more laid back and mellow than his on-tv personality and that’s a real benefit when it comes to learning from him. Instead of being nervous, you find yourself thinking this is the kind of guy you’d love to share a beer with. It just so happens that he’s one of our modern masters. This DVD does a good job of conveying David’s careful attention to detail and shows us exactly how he works his marquetry magic. The DVD does have a few technical production issues, but we find these can be easily overlooked thanks to the delivery of high quality information.

Got to say it! This DVD is one of the absolute best post-Woodworks video’s that David has produced to date! Like his Woodworks videos, when one watches this Marquetry DVD they will know how to do double bevel marquetry. But there is more to it than that. This DVD is inspirational!
I was inspired to do it. I literaly went to my shop, sliced up some veneer, and made a marquetry piece. The DVD filled in the gaps of knowledge that I did not have in my skill set. When watching the DVD I had that “Awe Ha” moment where I literally said to myself “Oh! so that is how that’s done!?”
    Great DVD!

Now for my review of Marc and Matt’s review:
Very nice review guys! And very fair. I remember a few months ago, Marc, when you mentioned on WTO what an inspiration this DVD is and you were right. This also came out in the review.

    Thanks,
    Gary Bell

Good show again guys. I appreciate the thoughtfulness you used when critiquing the video. I feel like the input you’re giving the wwing community is very valuable.

  3. Great review guys. I love DJM.

Also, I’d love to hear more of these if you can squeeze them in. Reviewing Woodworks episodes is actually a good idea and you could expand it to NYW episodes also.
