Trevor’s Jewelry Cabinet

I call this project Skeletons In Your Cupboard, but it is a jewelry cabinet. The design developed once I had made the drawers. The drawers had started to look like ribs to me, so Mr. skeleton was born. The cabinet is walnut with spalted beech panels and drawer fronts.

There is a watch winder compartment behind the mirror which locks and grins at you when you open the cupboard and the led lights switch on. The whole box sits on oak legs with a secret compartment.

Pity I didn’t have it finished for Halloween!

Love the piece! Excellant stock pairing and execution. The skull is cool (a Stealie would have been even cooler, but I’m just an old Deadhead). Any chance of some quick LxWxD stats? I’m doing a jewelry chest on stand for my G/F and I don’t want to tip my hand by asking her to stand still while I measure her “comfortable” working height *lol*.

    Thanks for the piece!

  2. Thanks for the comments.

The mirror idea came about as I was looking for a reason to have a lockable compartment to hide the watches for security. A plain mirror would not naturally be in the place I wanted it (you would always think there was something behind) so the idea of a back illuminated design emerged.

Why a skull. The ribs and possibly if you are looking at it when you shouldn’t you need to be scared!

  3. This is one of my favorite takes on a Krenov cabinet that I’ve seen! EXCELLENT! Love the material choice and lines. My first thought was it was a DeadHead cabinet.

  4. That’s a beautiful cabinet. I love the ribs!

  5. Outstanding project! The wood is stunning and your execution of the joinery looks perfect. The front handles and leg accents are a tasteful addition as well. I especially like the Krenovian look re: the legs supporting the box. For what it’s worth, I also really like the skull. First of all, given the state of the world, a little whimsy is a good thing. Second, it’s nicely done. Third, you’re right; it does work with the drawers to carry off a kind of skeleton effect. All in all, this is an extraordinarily beautiful piece and you are very talented. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  6. fun, love the handle

This is just amazing! I love the selection on the grain, fluid execution of the drawers… While the skull is not my favorite, I can truly think of a couple biker babes I know that would LOVE this! Because of that, and because the artist’s choice belong to the artist’s inspiration, I still give it a 10!

    Trevor,

I like the choice of wood and over all design. I understand where the idea of ribs came from and you’re certainly thinking outside the “box”, but you lost me with the whimsical addition of the skull. I would have rated it 9.5/10; however, imho the skull and red LEDs knock it down to 7.5/10. That’s just my opinion though. The execution still appears very well done. What are the approximate dimensions?

    Jay
