Sean’s Swivel Standing Mirrors

From: Sean M.

Location: Manchester, Mo

Hobbyist or Pro: Hobbyist

Project Name: Swivel Standing Mirrors

Wood Species: Cherry

Finish Used:
The finishing was with GF waterbased stain. The darker mirror is a combination of multiple stains. Shellac to seal and a few applications of the new Enduro-Var waterbased poly from GF. The finish is amazing.

Project Description:
The process began as a swivel mirror for my wife’s birthday. During the process, I watched one of Marc’s shows and I was inspired to attempt another design on the feet and that was the sliding dove tails. So what do with the extra mirror? Sell it? Give it away? The answer was the most obvious and that was to finish it for my mother and give it to her as a Christmas present.

All joinery is designed to not be seen for the most part. I used dowels for the cross members, half-laps for one set of legs and a sliding dove tail for the other legs.
The swivels are 1/4” steel pins with steel covers. This allows for an easy swivel. There is a slight taper to the mirror for aesthetic reasons and for functionality. Fun project and the ladies of my life love them!

Sean – is that a footrest in the back left of the top picture?

Exellant work Sean, did you build the other furniture in the background as well, it looks amazing.

    Really Nice Work Sean!
    Both mirrors look great

  4. Sean, I hadn’t noticed the taper when looking at the photos. Guess we all process photo distortions to look as we expect. Upon reflection (ahem) I believe the taper adds much to the effect. Great work.

Cool to do a series and try varied approaches. Much to be learned and pondered. Good stuff.

Nice work Sean. I bet you will be the favourite for a while!

    I like them a lot.

  7. Very nice work, Sean. The darker one looks almost black in the close-up picture, and that was just done by adding more stain? Beautiful finish on both of them. I’m sure your mother will be pleased.

Nice job! Just curious, did you buy the cherry, or mill it yourself?

    Sean,
Very nicely done. I really like the feet on the darker one. You blended the transition very well. I am sure the ladies do love them. Keep up the good work.
