My girlfriend wanted a new clock to be hung in the living room and I couldn’t have another Ikea item going in it’s place! I took on the challenge and this is what we came up with.
The clock face is quadmatched burl veneers applied to a MDF core. I put strips of maple in the frame and beveled them to bring attention to the face as well as break up the color between the walnut frame and walnut face. I am sure you can tell where the inspiration came from on the splines as well as the french cleats on the back.
Overall the project was fun and I learned a lot. Thanks Marc for all the help and the opportunity to share my project!

This looks fantastic the attention to detail and time that you must have invested, really show in the final product. Wow I think this has inspired me to produce a similar model for our home.
That is the most gorgeous clock I have seen in a long time. Nice work, Justin!
Wow!!! Thanks for all of the wonderful comments. This is one of the first projects I designed myself. Everything else has been from plans online or from magazines. It was definitely a fun little project. Brian no vacuum just used cauls and lots of clamps!
Now that is one fine clock. Love the burl matched like that. It really looks great on a clock. Excellent work.
Very neat and clean. Great work
A fine piece! Would love to see more of your inspiring creations.
Beautiful!
It is the essence of art. In the design. In the natural beauty of the wood. In the precise craftsmanship.
Fine Art!
Beautiful job. Great veneer and love the splines. Did you use a vacuum?
Looks fantastic. I definitely enjoy the splines and veneer. Did you use a vacuum or just cauls?
Looks great, with the combinations of the woods and veneer. The light burl design gives a look of “time is infinity”, the way it is similar to the infinity symbol.
Skip, I love the way you described the connection between the features of the chosen natural wood and the feeling of time and infinity.
I hadn’t consciously made the connection until I read the words “time is infinity”. The clock gives the subliminal impression of time measuring timelessness.
Justin has created something very special.
I’m really liking it as well. I just really like it. Great job.
Very nice :-) Well done!
Liking it Justin. Beautiful design and well executed.
Great looking clock, now all I need is to build one myself; if I could find the time…Oh wait, if I build a clock I would have the time, isn’t how that should work?
SWEET!!! Great design and use of some beautiful veneer.. Well done!!!
Nicely done. I love how well you showcased that Walnut burl. It was begging to be hung on the wall in a frame, and that’s what you did! ;)
I like the idea for the maple around the inside. I just did a 3D picture frame and I should have added this detail. I will do it next time. The burl walnut is amazing. Very well done!
Very nicely done and I especial like the splines and French cleat.
