173 – Sitting Bench Step Stool Preview

Subscribe (iTunes/RSS)

While I was in the shop yesterday, I took a few video clips using my phone. My intention was to simply upload these to various social networking sites (which I did). But then I realized that it might be nice to put all three videos together as a little preview of an upcoming project: The Child’s Sitting Bench. I guess you might call it a step-stool too, but I like the shorter title.

I am just now working out the details but you can expect this project to be released early this summer. It should be a fun little project with a few unexpected challenges here and there including curves, angles, and angled tenons.

Remember that jig you made to flatten the top of your workbench? Well, if you curve the sides of that you make a jig to cut the bottom of the seat for this chair using a router.

This looks great. I really hope you have a version with a through tenon into the seat because I have been trying to figure out a few options myself. I think it would be a great alternative, add a wedge like the Thomas Moser stuff and we could have an all wood no screws project.

Glad you’re doing this. In fact, I noticed your step stool from earlier videos and asked you about it ~4-6 months ago. I’ve just about completed mine – at the finishing stage. Used the bandsaw to cut the seat curve and glued the cut-out to the underside to really accentuate the curve. The mortises went in without a problem using the jig from the adirondack chair build. It is supremely satisfying when I can reuse skills, jigs and techniques. Thanks.

  4. Creating the illusion of curvatures while maintaining square reference surfaces should be very useful. I’m really looking forward to this project!

Note: taking Dramamine before watching the video helps – it’s a fun ride…

it looks like a simple project with nice details, I am actually more interested in the process of copying an object and how it can be applied to anything you might want to duplicate, maybe you could do another similar project but where you only have a picture and some kind of scale reference to go by

Cool! Look forward to this build! When are you going to start? I need a stool like that! Early Summer you say?

    Marc,

What’s the material towards the end of the video that you are using for your templates?

    Thanks,

    Joe
