Here are some photos of my shop. I claimed the two car garage as my room, and the rest of the house is all my wife’s (it would have been hers anyway). I feel like George Kastanza when I go to this room. I usually say “serenity now” to myself. After working for about a week, I decided to install the HVAC due to the heat and humidity. The room is about 18′ square. I found it very difficult to fit everything in the room, including the yard tools, the water heater (electric), the water softener, and the refrigerator. You will notice Mason, my little shop buddy, in the clamp drawer. He is a huge help.
Very nice shop Ryan. Looks like you do a lot of turning. I was just looking at the JET 708359 lathe. Just curious what model you went for and how you like it. Turning seems like so much fun… the one thing that turns me away is the mess it makes… especially turning green lumber… seems like it would put a fair amount of moisture all around the area and with cast iron everywhere in the shop I’m not sold on the idea. This probably isn’t the place to throw such questions but just though I’d ask. Hmmm, do you open up the garage doors when you turn to just vent some of the mess out that way?
I like what you build into your lathe for the tools; looks handy and space-saving.
Also like the cool-looking picture frame you have in your toolbox.

Nice to have AC in the panhandle. We used to live in Ft Walton Beach (before I got into woodworking). It would have been pretty tough without it. Now that we are in Virginia, it’s pretty tough without Heating in my garage workshop.

Ryan, very nice shop. Kind of looks like mone in a roundabout way. I also share a two car garage-workshop. Still working on the wife to put the cars outside for good. What side of town are you on? I am also in jacksonville-Arlington-Ft Caroline area.

Thanks for the comments on my shop. My wife got the Jet 2HP 1642 for christmas last year. It is a great lathe! If i had unlimited funds, i would get a Oneway with the stainless steel bed upgrade! Humidity is a issue. i keep the AC on to keep it under control. I used alot of Scotch Brite and WD 40, until i decided to was the bed and tops. That seemed to keep it under control. I do not open the door because of the AC. I have a dust collecter for all the machines, what ever is left (which is alot) i sweep up.
The cabinet on the lathe was a design in American Woodworker. The biggest problem is the chips fall in the holes where the tools are. The box under it is a ballast box. it has large squares of concrete and the balance is sand to weigh down the lathe.

I hate to rain in your parade, but maybe it is not apropriate to let Mason play in the workshop untill he gets to be older and understands the danger of tools
I seriously doubt that Mason is actually allowed to “play” in the shop. What father wouldn’t want to snap a quick shot of his boy rootin’ though the clamp drawer? lol
And just in case the title, “Ryan and Mason’s Shop” causes any concerns, I want to make sure everyone knows that I called it that to be cute. Not because Mason actually plays in there.
I’m with Leon… I’ve also seen many pics of dogs in people’s shops and rarely have I seen them using proper body position at the table saw. Sorry Leon… couldn’t resist. ;-]

Cool shop. U really packed it in there. Just be sure u take the keys out of ur tools or unplug/kill the breaker for Mason’s sake. I have 3 small boys and they love to touch. Luckily the one time My middle boy turned on my TS the blade was down below the table. I never leave the yellow keys in anymore.
Hey, nice to see another person from Jacksonville here. I have my shop in my two car garage also. I built a shed in the back to house all the unimportant tools (mower, weedeater, etc.)
The heat in the garage has been unbearable until lately. I got an old window unit to put in but haven’t done it yet. Now that the weather is in the low 80′s the need is even less.
Any chance you hang out at Woodcraft all the time like me?
Are we all in Jacksonville? I am in Argyle Forest and also have the garage/shop configuration.
