Winter 2011 Guild Build

If you’re not already a Guild member, now is a great time to join. We’re about to embark on our next Guild Build this January! So knock the ice off your chisels and add some anti-freeze to your tablesaw, because its time to make some sawdust!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create a beautiful and functional hanging wall cabinet. I plan on hanging mine in the bathroom, but you could certainly place this bad boy anywhere you need a little extra storage, such as the home office or even the shop! Heck, you can even modify the design slightly and create a tool cabinet! As we have done in the past, this project will be presented in two versions.

Version 1

The primary build will utilize nearly 100% solid wood construction. Techniques and features include:

  • Dovetail Case Joinery
  • Dados
  • Mortise & Tenons
  • Frame & Panel Doors
  • Dovetail Drawer Construction
  • Knife Hinge installation

Version 2

Now if that sounds a little too intimidating, we’ve got you covered like a varnish! The second version of the cabinet will look nearly identical to the first, but requires much less in the way of tools, materials, and experience. Techniques and features include:

  • Pocket Screw/Plywood Construction
  • Dados
  • Reinforced Rabbet Joints
  • Frame & Panel Doors
  • Edgebanding Plywood
  • Trim & Molding Application
  • Butt Hinge Installation

Regardless of which version you choose, you’ll learn incredibly valuable techniques that will serve as the foundation for just about every project you make in the future. A worthy challenge for any woodworker! The cabinet itself is elegant, simple, and can be modified to suit your personal tastes or decor.

Of course a Guild membership provides all kinds of great benefits including three of these builds per year, access to our growing archive, and discounts with some of your favorite vendors! For more information, check out the Guild page or sign up today!

Excellent! Love it, can’t wait to do it!

Really swamped with work but if I can find time my version will be a tool cabinet for the shop.
If you are not a guild member what are you waiting for, joining the guild was the best woodworking move I ever made.

I am looking forward to this build.

Great idea! I’ll be building this one. Can’t wait to start! Do you have a total bf figured yet?

    • Keggers December 26, 2010

Never mind the bf question. I found the plans.

Got my Guild membership for Christmas, can’t wait to get started!

Got mine for Christmas last year Mike, best thing I ever did in my journey – you will love it… JCM

  5. Erik December 28, 2010

I also just joined. Looking forward to my first guild build.

  6. Jerry S December 28, 2010

You guys are killin’ me! I so wish I could join. But it is just not in the cards right now. Wife has been layed off for almost a year now…this would be one of those luxury items that just won’t make the cut when we only have 1 income. If I were to join, my version would also be a tool cabinet. Can’t wait for things to get better.
    Have fun!

I’m not a member yet, but I am building cabinet anyway.

  8. Do you guys know that piece of quilted maple behind the spokeshave in my logo? That will fit perfectly as the panels in these doors. I have a big empty spot on the wall next to my desk that is begging for this shelf. I hope to be able to participate and blog about it while keeping up with the Hand Tool School final project which is also a wall cabinet.

The Guild Membership was my Christmas present to myself this year. The only good thing I got other than bench cookies….
