TWW Android App

Every time we mention our iPhone application, the most common retort we receive is, “How about an Android app??” In fact, it became a bit of a running joke amongst our little community. And every time we say anything remotely related to mobile devices, there was always someone there to say, “How about an Android app??” So we are proud, and relieved, to finally announce the new TWW Android App.

Now we certainly can’t take all the credit here. If it wasn’t for the hard work and generosity of our Australian buddy Josh Dixon (hoverman1977 on Twitter) this project would have never gotten off the ground. Creating this app was a little beyond our in-house abilities, so we can all thank Josh for his hard work. Even after the app was created, Nicole had quite a bit of work to do to get everything compiled and submitted to the Android Marketplace. So a big “thank you” goes out to my beautiful bride as well.

If you have an Android mobile device, you can now conveniently access our articles, projects, and videos through this most excellent application:
The Wood Whisperer Android App

Are you a Blackberry user? We haven’t left you hanging either. While we don’t have a stand-alone app available, The Wood Whisperer podcast should be available through the new Blackberry podcast application.

I was excited to see this, hoping it was an Android version of the Woodshop Widget, but it wasn’t. I’ll quote a section from the post about that:

“We?ve been thinking about putting an app out there for some time now, but the last thing we wanted to do was give you a glorified RSS feed of TWW content.”

Not that I don’t appreciate what you do and what was released.

A few things Jason. If you ask me, I still think an app of our content is incredibly redundant. The mobile version of our site is excellent and if you are on an iPhone, you can even create a web app from it. But if I made business decisions based on only my needs, we probably wouldn’t get very far. It was pretty clear that lots of folks wanted our content via an app, and with over 10,000 subscribers to the iPhone app alone, I am glad we made it.
As far as functionality goes, of course the Woodshop Widget is way cool. But we were not able to satisfy the content side of things within that app. That’s the reason for the development of content-based apps on multiple platforms.
Now if you want the Woodshop Widget on Android, that’s completely out of our control. While we helped promote it and I gave Kenneth (the creator) feedback on features and the user interface, its really his baby. And frankly, I don’t think he has any plans to expand the app to other platforms. That said, I was under the impression that you can simply access the full widget on the website. Obviously not as convenient as an app, but you still have the functionality on your mobile device.

Looks pretty good. Pretty responsive on my original Moto Droid too.

This post would explain the bunch of new followers on twitter! :)

I do plan on expanding the functionality of the app to include tools as well, and will try to implement any suggestions that get filtered through.

I’m having a bit of trouble trying to watch the video’s. Everytime I click on a video link it goes to another screen and then back to the orginal page. Not sure why. I can watch the videos via youtube.com.

  8. Looks great, I’ve had it installed for a few days now.

I’d also love to see the Woodshop Widget as an Android app, but works fine really in the browser.

What’s an iPhone or an Android? ;-) Guess I’ve been buried under the sawdust too long.

Thanks Marc…I was a little slow on the fact that there was an iPod touch version already. Got the widget confused with the TWW app. Forgot they are TOTALLY separate. AND one is not really “your’s”. Just started “playing” with it. I like it.

  14. Marc & Josh,
As a loud and vocal member of the “We need an Android App” camp, let me say thank you. I really love and appreciate the application. Well done.

Now, where did I leave that contact info for Kenneth . . .

  15. Awesome! Many thanks to all who made this possible!

  16. David G February 15, 2011

Just downloaded the app and it is great! Thanks Marc!
